Internal courtyard in Essex Street
Description
View down to the internal courtyard of 14 Essex Street, City of Westminster. Essex Street is a cul-de-sac running south from the Strand. It was laid out by Nicholas Barbon between 1675-1680, in the grounds of Essex House, formerly Leicester House built in 1575 by Robert Dudley, first Earl of Leicester. A terraced house with attic and basement, built as part of the Barbon development, with the front elevation restored in the mid-twentieth century. The courtyard separates the main house, from what would have been the mews or stables at the rear. The skylight is at the top of the main interior of a house. The house is Grade II listed, listing number 1357026. In 1851 this house was occupied by solicitor Henry Tyler, his brother Thomas a Barrister's clerk, and four servants.
