Building in Gerrard Street
Description
View of number 41 on the south side of Gerrard Street, Soho. Above the first-floor windows the name W. Pairpoint and Sons Ltd is painted on the front elevation. Below this is a signboard bearing the name 'SCOTT', but other text is illegible. Scaffolding can be seen on the roof, supporting a cradle for maintenance work. The cradle bears the name Palmers Travelling Cradle. At the kerb is parked a motorcycle and sidecar, registration UMF730. To the left part of number 42 can be seen, bearing the words 'Tailor & Cutter, The Authority on Style and Clothes'. What appears to be advertising material can be seen in the ground-floor window. To the right can be seen numbers 40 and 39, and part of number 38. Number 40 reads Auger and Turner Limited ADVERTISING. A fanlight over the front door reads [...UTUR HOUSE]. Number 39 looks very run down and is to let by P. E. GOODWINS and For Sale by F. J. Edwards. A board above a first-floor window reads ‘Astral Millinery Manufacturers’. Number 41 is part of the original development of Gerrard Street by Nicholas Barbon, begun in 1677. Today Gerrard Street is the heart of London’s Chinatown. Number 41 was Grade II listed in 1970, listing number 1212804.
