Description
View of the former home of the Victorian preacher and philanthropist Charles Haddon Spurgeon at 99 Nightingale Lane, Balham, looking south. The low front wall of the house is topped by ornate cast iron balustrading. The building was converted into the Queen Elizabeth Maternity Home of the South London Hospital for Women, which opened in 1947. In 1975, it was renamed Queen Elizabeth House, a pre-convalescent home, closing in 1984. Currently the building provides sheltered retirement housing managed by the Wandle Housing Association.
