View of Elephant and Castle
Description
View of Elephant and Castle, Newington, looking south to Walworth Road to the left and Newington Butts to the right. A major crossroads since Roman times, Elephant and Castle is named after a coaching inn set at the junction. The area suffered devastation on 10th May 1941 during World War II bombing. The rooftop view shows a newly-developed roundabout. In the background is a railway viaduct leading into Elephant and Castle Station across Walworth Road. A vacant site ahead with a sign for 'LCC Elephant and Castle Improvement'. On the vacant site was built an office block Castle House, this was demolished, and the site is now the 43-storey Strata building designed by designed by BFLS (formerly Hamiltons). To the left is another vacant site with sign and a map for 'LCC Elephant and Castle Development'. On that site was built the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, itself demolished in 2021 and now the site of high-rise residential blocks.
