View of Elephant and Castle
Description
Elevated view of the Elephant and Castle, Newington. Looking north-east across Newington Butts towards the New Kent Road. The Elephant and Castle, a major crossroads since Roman times, is named after a coaching inn set at the junction. The area suffered devastation on 10th May 1941 during World War II bombing. The bombed area in the foreground is being cleared and on this site was built the Elephant and Castle shopping centre. The domed building is the Elephant and Castle Northern Line underground station opened in 1890. It was rebuilt during the construction of the Elephant & Castle shopping centre in 1963, and rebuilt again in 2003. In the background on the right is the Trocadero Cinema designed by George Coles and opened in 1930 seating 3500. It housed the largest Wurlitzer Organ in Europe. The building was demolished in 1963, and on the site was rebuilt the Elephant and Castle pub and office blocks designed by Hungarian-born modernist architect Ernő Goldfinger. These are now Grade II listed, listing number 1405570. At the junction of London Road and the New Kent Road two advertising hoardings advertise Bertram Mills Circus at Olympia and Bovril. In the background on the left, on the corner of St Georges Road and London Road, is the four-storey Alfred's Head pub. A pub since at least 1803, it was demolished and the site is now part of the northern Elephant and Castle roundabout. Numerous vehicles including buses, lorries and cars are on the road.
