Front elevation of a school at Spencer House, 4 Peek Crescent, Wimbledon, occupied by The Study preparatory school. The Study was founded in 1893 by Sarah Kate Sidford, a member of the London Society for Women's Suffrage North Wimbledon branch. She was a governess who taught in the study of a large house in Wimbledon. From these modest beginnings the growing school moved first to a local church hall and then, in 1903, to this purpose-built premises designed by Miss Sidford's brother, Alfred. The Study became a registered charity in 1975 and expanded into another site in Wimbledon, Wilberforce House, Camp Road in 2020. As of 2021 there are approximately 320 pupils across both sites. In this photograph an Austin saloon car is parked outside the building. The school sits within the Merton Council conservation area and was added to the London Borough of Merton local (non-statutory) list of buildings of historical or architectural interest in February 1991. Peek Crescent takes its name from Sir Henry Peek who was the last resident of Wimbledon House, a large estate on Parkside, Wimbledon. The Peek family owned the Peek Freans biscuit business.
