Description
W H Cullen family grocers and wine merchants at number 75 and the Post Office at number 79 Ridgway, Wimbledon. This terrace of shops formerly known as Denmark Terrace was built on the site of two small groups of cottages which originally backed on to Ridgway. In the late-nineteenth century, when these shops were built, some addresses took the name “Denmark”, thought to be in honour of Princess Alexandra of Denmark, a popular figure, married to the Prince of Wales. There is a large sign for W H Cullen on the Denmark Road elevation with the telephone number Wimbledon 5180 and the sign for Denmark Terrace on the first floor of this shop. Bottles and cans of drinks are in the window of the shop. Priced posters for drinks are pasted onto the window. There is a bicycle and a shopping trolley on the pavement. The next door Post Office is partly in the photograph.
