Shop in Ridgway
Description
Front elevation of W H Cullen family grocers and wine merchants at 77 Ridgway, Wimbledon. Posters advertising goods and prices are pasted to the window. Supermarket trolleys are outside on the pavement, and a pedestrian is walking past. This terrace of shops formerly known as Denmark Terrace was built on the site of two small groups of cottages which originally backed on to Ridgway. In the late-nineteenth century when these shops were built, some addresses took the name “Denmark”, thought to be in honour of Princess Alexandra of Denmark, a popular figure, married to the Prince of Wales.
