Title
Tower and houses in Phipps Bridge Road
Description
View of Everetts Place, 84 Phipps Bridge Road, Mitcham, a row of former millworkers' cottages and a flint-built circular tower. Dating from 1824 the tower was designed by Mr Gilliat Hatfeild as a mock ruined folly to buttress the cottages against subsidence. Mr Hatfeild (1864-1941) was the owner of nearby Wandle Villa. The Hatfeild family were in the snuff mill business and amongst other sites, owned the snuff mill at Morden and the Morden Hall estate, which Mr Hatfeild gifted to the National Trust upon his death. By the 1870s a spiral staircase to the tower and garden walls in front of the cottages were added with leftover stone from the construction. In this photograph a saloon car is parked outside the cottages. Within the Wandle Valley conservation area and added to the London Borough of Merton local (non-statutory) list of buildings of historical or architectural interest in February 1991.
