Description
Front and side elevation of 54 Ridgway, Wimbledon. A three-storey detached house with Grade II listing; listing number 1080913. Designed in the Queen Anne revival manner by the architect Sir Thomas Graham Jackson. It was occupied by Haygarth Memorial Training School for Girls, founded in 1859 by Canon Henry William Haygarth and his wife Emma in order to train girls for domestic service and originally accommodated 18 pupils. Canon Haygarth served at nearby St Mary's Church from 1859 until his death in 1902. The school closed in 1945 because the class size had dwindled to just five pupils. This building sits within the Ridgway sub area of the Merton Council conservation area.
