Carshalton House water pavilion in Pound Street
Description
Water Pavilion on the Carshalton House estate, Carshalton. A Grade II* building, number 1183926. Sir John Fellowes, a founding director of the South Sea Company, acquired the Carshalton House Estate from Dr John Radcliffe although there were complications with the purchase because a previous owner, Edward Carlton, had been declared bankrupt and owed money to the Crown. Fellowes commissioned the water tower possibly designed by Henry Joynes and engineered by Richard Cole. This early eighteenth-century tower contains a bath room with a plunge bath lined with Delft tiles. The original wheel to the pumping chamber was removed in 1960. There is an orangery on the south front. In this photograph a milk float is parked on West Street. The pavilion is within Sub Area A of the Carshalton House Estate Conservation Area.
