Title
Grotto or hermitage at Carshalton House
Description
Grotto or hermitage in the landscaped grounds of Carshalton House, Pound Street, Carshalton, now St Philomena’s Catholic High School for Girls locally known as St Phillys. The grotto is thought to have been constructed in the early-eighteenth century and is Grade II* listed, listing number 1065627. It was originally built for Edward Carleton, a London tobacco merchant who, following bankruptcy in 1700, sold the estate to Dr John Radcliffe. The estate was then purchased by Sir John Fellowes who added the Grade II* listed (1183926) Water Pavilion and further developed the grounds and the Pound Street entrance gates, also Grade II* listed 1357607. The estate was then owned by a succession of wealthy individuals until 1893 when the Daughters of the Cross purchased the site for use as a school. Later additions included the Grade II* listed chapel built around 1899 with listing number 1065626. There is fencing and a 'Danger Keep Out' sign.
