Description
Open gates to Carshalton House, Pound Street, Carshalton. The piers and gates are Grade II* listed, listing number 1357607. The piers are decorated with lion heads. A saloon car in the drive. Carshalton House is Grade II* listed, listing number 1065627 and was originally built for Edward Carleton, a London tobacco merchant who, following bankruptcy in 1700, sold the estate to Dr John Radcliffe. The estate was then purchased by Sir John Fellowes who added the Grade II* listed 1183926 Water Pavilion and further developed the grounds and the Pound Street entrance gates. The estate was then owned by a succession of wealthy individuals until 1893 when the Daughters of the Cross purchased the site for use as a school, St Philomena’s Catholic High School for girls, locally known as St Phillys. Later additions included the Grade II* listed chapel built around 1899 with listing number 1065626.
