Description
Front elevation of shops with a neighbouring public house, The Hope, at 40-42 West Street, Carshalton. Number 42 West Street is an early eighteenth-century building used as a shop and extended over the forecourt with residential accommodation upstairs at 42B. It is Grade II* listed, listing number 1183980. The shop is A. D. and H. J. Hutt, General Store, with a telephone number WAL (Wallington) 4517. Goods are in display in the shop windows with advertisements for Wall’s ice cream and Lyons Cakes. The building was later altered to feature a bow window with a more elegant frontage. Number 40 has a sign projecting from the wall for Fish Scampi Chips. An MG car is parked opposite.
