Title
Clarence House in The Vineyard
Description
Clarence House at 2 The Vineyard, Richmond. Obscured front elevation of a large house with a truncated view of the drive into the neighbouring Roman Catholic Church of St Elizabeth of Portugal. Two cars and a motor scooter are parked in the drive. In the late seventeenth century Nathaniel Rawlings, a member of the Haberdashers' Company, consolidated an estate of three acres between Red Lion Street and The Vineyard on which he built Clarence House. A blue plaque celebrates Bernardo O’Higgins’ education here (O’Higgins was the illegitimate son of Ambrosio O'Higgins, a Spanish officer born in Ireland, who became Governor of Chile and later Viceroy of Peru). In 1840s and 1850s the house served as a school for girls, and from 1941 to 1947 it was used as a warehouse by Fortnum & Mason. A private dwelling since 1947, it was owned by the actor Brian Blessed in 1967-76. Clarence House is Grade II listed, listing number 1253023.
