Title
Houses in The Terrace
Description
The Terrace, which runs alongside the Thames in Barnes in the Barnes Green conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames, has several eighteenth and nineteenth-century houses of exceptional quality. This view shows the frontage of a Victorian mid-terrace building at 12 The Terrace, having the appearance of a shop on the ground floor with a picturesque balustraded and canopied balcony above. Used as office premises during the 1970s and much altered and extended to the rear and above with an additional storey, it was listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit in 1983. The building to its left at 11A is believed to have been a brass foundry, since demolished and replaced with a group of townhouses at Maltings Close to the rear of The Terrace, their rear elevations styled to blend in with the traditional frontages of the adjacent buildings. Part of number 13 is also visible to the right of view, which appears to be little altered save the addition of a pediment above its entrance. Paired with 14 The Terrace, which is out of view but known as the home of Dame Ninette De Valois (1898-2001), Founder of the Royal Ballet, who lived there in 1962-82, 13-14 The Terrace are early to mid eighteenth century and were Grade II listed in 1951, listing number1252885.
