Description
This view shows the former Crown Inn building at number 38 Thames Street in the Hampton Village conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Built in the eighteenth-century, it can be seen as the Crown Inn in early twentieth-century images, but by the time this photograph was taken it appears to have been converted into residential use and divided into two properties at 38 and 38A. It was Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1252978. Number 40 to the left of view is thought to have been used at one time as a grocer's shop and is listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit. 36 Thames Street to the right of view is also a former shop and listed locally. A modern concrete lamp post in front of the former inn serves as a reminder that historic Thames Street now forms a short stretch of the A308 route connecting Windsor with Kingston-upon-Thames.
