Shops in Thames Street
Description
This view shows two shop buildings on the north side of Thames Street in the Hampton Village conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. To the centre of view is 34 Thames Street, trading as a wine merchants shop although no name is displayed. Photographs from the early twentieth-century show a first floor balcony, hence the full height central window, and the slatted shutters appear to have been a long-standing if not original feature of its south-facing frontage. Some bottles and party-sized cans are on display, but only few brand signs are visible. Like many former shop properties, it has since been converted to residential use and it listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit. To its left, the loading doors are thought to have led to a yard to the rear of the premises and has since been infilled with arched window frames of similar design to the current day display windows, possibly from a time when it was used as a bookshop. Number 36 with the oriel window appears to have been converted to residential use already and is also listed locally. The oriel window case has since been replaced with a dark timber framed and panelled structure with Gothic style window insets. The modern brick semi-detached building to the right of view at 30-32 Thames Street, together with number 32's projecting side entrance have since been replaced or remodelled. It appears to have been in commercial use as there is a service door with a Volkswagen van just visible parked on the hard stand in front. A man in a raincoat appears to be making ready to ride away on a small-wheeled shopping bicycle.
