Shops in Thames Street
Description
This view shows some shop buildings on the north side of Thames Street in the Hampton Village conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Many of the former shops that once thrived in this part of the historic village have now been converted to residential use, the narrow pavement along this section of the busy A308 deterring loading, parking, and passing pedestrian trade. Number 36 with the oriel window appears to have been converted to residential use already and is listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit. The oriel window case has since been replaced with a dark timber framed and panelled structure with Gothic style window insets. The loading doors are believed to serve the adjacent shop at 34 Thames Street, shown trading as a wine merchants. Photographs from the early twentieth-century show a first floor balcony and the slatted shutters appear to have been a long-standing if not original feature of its south-facing frontage. Some bottled drinks and what appear to be plastic home brew barrels are neatly displayed in the window, although it is difficult to make out any particular brand. The shop has since been converted to residential use and is also listed locally. Number 38, only partly visible to left of view, used to be the Crown Inn. Dating from the eighteenth century, it was Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1252978.
