Description
This view shows a group of buildings on the south side of Thames Street, mostly with shop fronts, but also including the former gate house and clock tower of the Hampton Water Works, all in the Hampton Village conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. The three-storey building to the centre of view shown trading as White Leaf Engineering Company Limited at 23 Thames Street stands next to the former post office, just visible to the left, and was once a butcher's shop. It has since been converted into flats and is listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit. The industrial buildings to the rear of 23 Thames Street are still in commercial use. The smaller shop building shown at number 25 with the curtained display window still stands today is also listed locally. Number 27, shown here as also being used by White Leaf Engineering has since been replaced by a modern residential development. The building with the clock tower shown beyond is part of the nineteenth-century Waterworks Gatehouse, Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1252975, originally built by the Southwark & Vauxhall Water Company. A learner's motorcycle and an Invacar three-wheel mobility vehicle are shown parked on the pavement in front of the shops.
