Shop in Thames Street
Description
This view show ALADDIN'S CAVE, a motorcycle spares shop that once stood on the south side of Thames Street, in the Hampton Village conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. A motorcycle and several metallic parts are just visible in the unlit display windows. One has a BSA sign. Hand-painted signage on the entrance door's window reads WE HAVE SPARES FOR ANY MAKE OF BIKE WE CAN GET OUR HANDS ON ALSO SOME COMPLETE BIKES. A stencilled poster stuck inside the larger window asks DO YOU WANT TO EARN MONEY IN YOUR SPARE TIME? SELL FOR US AND GET RICH PHONE 01... Another advertises a motorcycle grass track racing event at Burnt Oak Farm. An adjacent passageway displays a sign for Constable's Boat House. In the late nineteenth-century, local boatbuilder John Constable established boatyards here and nearby at Tagg's Island and the firm is still trading in renovated boat houses to the rear of number 15, shown to the left of view in much disrepair but since renovated and refurbished as office premises now known as Queen Anne House. This eighteenth-century house at 15 Thames Street was Grade II listed in 1975, listing number 1252974. Just visible to the right of view is part of the derelict soap works, which dated back to 1760. Once a soap, candle and tallow refinery, it was owned by WG Smith, the Albion Soap Company and the 1960s brand Simple, before falling into disuse and being severely fire damaged. An apartment block now stands in its place at number 19, the design of which recalls the pediments of the factory building.
