Sydney Road is an estate of late-Victorian houses off Church Road in the Sheen Road conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. This view shows the single pair of semi-detached houses at numbers 37 and 37A on the south-east corner of the estate. Number 37, two stories with half-level basement, has door and window surrounds matching those of the rest of the houses in Sydney Road, but 37A, although of traditional appearance, is noticeably different in form and style, its frontage having a pediment, a window bay to its raised ground floor and basement levels, and a side extension with a lean-to tiled and timber framed porch. Its numbering and differences in design indicate it was a later addition, possibly late-nineteenth or early twentieth century. It is believed to be divided into apartments, made evident by the arrays of television aerials and satellite dishes since fitted to its chimney and projecting frontage. The building to the right of view was a works building now converted into office units in an annex to Printworks House on Dunstable Road, just visible beyond. The zigzag iron gates, since removed, belonged to number 38, one of a pair of semi-detached houses listed as Buildings of Townscape merit. To the left of view cropped beyond the concrete lamp post is 1 Sydney Road, the end of a terrace of fifteen two-storey houses also listed locally. A Citroen GS estate is also shown parked in number 37's car port.
