Description
This view shows a group of historic shop-fronted buildings on the north side of Thames Street in the Hampton Village conservation of Richmond-upon-Thames, none of which appear to be in use as shops in the photograph, nor indeed in the present day, but at one time they included a coffee house and a grocer's shop. Most prominent in view with the window bays to either side of its entrance is number 22, which is early eighteenth-century and was Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1252977. To its left, 24 Thames Street with the elderly man shown walking past is believed to be late eighteenth-century and was also Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1262014. Also Grade II listed in 1983, 26 Thames Street is of similar age with nineteenth-century shop window, listing number 1262001. Number 28 with the oriel window and ornate parapet is listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit. The curved wall shown to the right of 22 Thames Street belongs to the Red Lion public house on Hampton High Street, which has since been converted into flats.
