Title
Cottages in Towers Place
Description
This view shows a terrace of three cottages that once stood in Towers Place, a narrow, cobbled yard off Eton Street in central Richmond. Known as Towers Cottages, they are believed to have dated back to the 1860s. The concrete lamp post in front of the terrace undermines the otherwise historic appearance of the yard. The large brick building in the background was the Ritz Cinema, later the ABC Cinema, at 23 Sheen Road. Designed by Samuel Beverley in association with Leslie H Kemp, it opened in 1938, but was closed in 1971 and subsequently demolished. It had a Neo-Georgian frontage and could seat 1,456 in the stalls and 694 in the circle. Its Wurlitzer organ was exported to Australia. In the foreground to the left of view is the flanking wall and single-storey extension of the shop that still stands at 18 Eton Street, one of a terrace of three shops thought to be of similar age to the cottages, all listed locally as Buildings of Townscape Merit. Towers Place now leads to Union Court, an apartment block now served by a modernised cobbled driveway.
