Title
Cottages in Thames Street
Description
Described as the earliest surviving building in Hampton, 2-6 Thames Street in the Hampton Village conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames is believed to have been built as a church house in the 1540s before being leased as an inn. It was known as The Feathers and is thought to have been divided into separate cottages in 1792. The cottages at 2, 4, and 6 are known respectively as Garrick Cottage, Feathers Cottage, and River Cottage, the latter appearing nearest in this view. Garrick refers to David Garrick (1717-1779), the actor manager who owned the house now known as Garrick's Villa just out of view to the right on Hampton Court Road. The former Feathers building at 2-6 Thames Street was Grade II listed 1983, listing number 1262009. Records for St Mary's Church date back to 1342 and the triangular area now formed by Thames Street, High Street, and Church Street was the hub of the ancient village. The junction with Church Street is shown beyond with a Vauxhall Victor Estate waiting to turn onto Thames Street. Cracking is visible in the stucco on River Cottage's frontage, which has since been remedied and bracing fitted. An AA sign on the concrete lamp post points towards a costume exhibition, most likely to be taking place at Hampton Court Palace.
