Description
3 Thames Street, also known as Lion House, was once a hotel on this ancient riverside through road, now forming a small stretch of the A308, Benn's Alley sloping to its eastern flank down to the Thames. Dating from the eighteenth-century, it presents focal point for a vista formed by the High Street in the Hampton Village conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames and was Grade II listed in 1983, List Entry Number: 1261998. This view shows its frontage and pitched slate roof, with a single-storey extension to the right of view and an added ground floor window bay. Used for a time as offices, it was converted to residential use and a substantial extension added to its west flank in the 1980s using period style and materials. Having its own entrance the extended part is now called Leander House. The window bay has also been removed since to match the original window pattern, and the frontage now has grey-washed stucco with white door, surround, and band course. A concrete lamp post to the left of view carries a direction sign with an arrow pointing towards Shepperton.
