Description
This view shows a row of cottages at numbers 16-19 First Cross Road in the Twickenham Green conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Overlooking The Green from its west side, they are all listed locally as Buildings of Townscape Merit. The artisans' cottages were built in the early nineteenth century and have long narrow rear gardens. They once overlooked Workhouse Allotment, created when the land, formerly part of Hounslow Heath, was first enclosed in 1818. First Cross Road used to be called Workhouse Road and the workhouse itself once stood across the former Hanworth and Twickenham Road to the north. The workhouse was demolished in 1845 and the allotment was sold to Twickenham Town Council for recreational use. The cottages have since had enclosed front porches added, but have retained their general character. Partly visible to the right of view, the school building at number 20 was formerly the Holy Trinity Church Institute, the church itself located across the Hampton Road to the south of the Green. It became the Twickenham Preparatory School and is now the Jack & Jill Nursery & Pre-Preparatory. In the foreground, a heap of road base material has been left in the road.
