Title
Tudor Place Mews and Tudor Cottage in Friary Lane
Description
This view shows Tudor Place Mews and Tudor Cottage on Friary Lane, in the Richmond Green conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. They are believed to have served Tudor Place and Tudor House at 44 The Green, the rear of which is just visible to the right of view, Grade II listed in 1950; listing number 1065316. The mews building has a hipped roof and the first floor has brick facing to one side of its frontage, with rendered and timber frame to the right. A wooden external staircase, with what appear to be jerseys draped over its balustrade, serves a wide utility door to the first floor. The ground floor has four garage doorways of different style, one showing evidence of a removed structure. The front boundary wall has two wide timber gates, each serving a pair of garages, one displaying a PLEASE DO NOT OBSTRUCT notice. The brick cottage to the right of view has a hipped slate roof with a lean-to extension, also slate, with a single-potted chimney stack and a modern flue emerging from its flanking wall. It is believed that these buildings were demolished in the early 1980s and replaced with buildings of similar footprint and outline. The current building has an open set of driveways presenting four garages of uniform styling with residential apartments to the first floor. Friars Lane marked the boundary between Richmond Palace and the House of Observant Franciscan Friars, established by Henry VII in 1499.
