Title
Houses on the Twickenham Embankment
Description
This three-quarter view shows the rear and side elevations 23 The Embankment, a two-storey house in the Twickenham Riverside conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames built in the early eighteenth-century. It was Grade II listed in 1952; listing number 1080816. Part of the adjoining house at 22 The Embankment is also visible to the right of the building. Of similar age and construction, it was also Grade II listed in 1952; listing number 1358071. Both properties appear to be empty and at the start of renovation work. The pitched tiled roof, small single dormer, external chimney stack, and ground floor brickwork are shown clearly. The neighbouring site in the foreground to the right of view was once occupied by a four-storey house, demolished in the 1950s. A slatted concrete boundary wall, part of which appears to have been removed to make convenient use of the vacant site, is shown with piles of old bricks and sand stored in front. Both houses are now restored and a traditional brick boundary wall surrounds the properties. The vacant site to the left is now occupied by Flood Lane. The Victorian-era brick building beyond was once a Mission Hall and is believed to have been used as a boat store around the time this photograph was taken. It is now the Mary Wallace Theatre, home of the Richmond Shakespeare Society, and the adjoining buildings remodelled to serve the venue. Just visible in the background are the boatyards of Eel Pie Island on the River Thames.
