Title
Houses on the Twickenham Embankment
Description
This view shows a row of historic houses on The Embankment in the Twickenham Riverside conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames, taken from the corner of Bell Lane. Nearest to view, the three-storey house at 2 The Embankment is believed to have been built in 1721. It was Grade II listed in 1952; listing number 1080813. In more recent times it was the home of The Who's songwriter and guitarist Pete Townshend. Strand House at number 3 The Embankment is of similar age, two storeys, and is set back from number 2's front elevation. It was also Grade II listed in 1952; listing number 1358069. A transverse footpath divides the houses from the front gardens shown, which now have mature plantings that largely obscure the view of these frontages from the road. Shown beyond, the hipped roof and upper storey of a timber-framed house at 5 The Embankment is thought to be seventeenth century and was Grade II listed in 1983; listing number 1080814. The group of two-storey brick cottages at numbers 8, 9, and 10, are eighteenth century and were also Grade II listed in 1983; listing number 1080815. Partly visible to the right of view are the roofs of 19 The Embankment and the Barmy Arms pub, both listed locally as Buildings of Townscape Merit. The perpendicular tower of the church of St Mary can also be seen above the rooftops, the body of the church being rebuilt to the designs of John James in 1714. It was Grade II* listed in 1952; listing number 1080852.
