Title
Shops in Hill Street
Description
This view shows 4 Hill Street in the Central Richmond conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames, its shop trading as Mr James menswear. 2-6 Hill Street and 2 Red Lion Street were demolished in the late 1980s to widen the busy junction. Adjoining a row of surviving nineteenth-century shop buildings incorporating both nationally and locally listed, 4 Hill Street is shown with three Georgian-style bowed shop windows set back from pillars to the centre and each side of the shopfront. The display includes formally dressed torso mannequins and signs above each window promise a HALF-PRICE-OFFER. The windows above the right-hand shop front appear to have interwar Crittall steel window frames. There are cracking and missing bricks evident in the parapet brickwork to the corner of the building. The disused shop to its right at number 6 has partly-torn posters over its window advertising gigs by The Boomtown Rats, The Motors at the Marquee, and Jazz at The Tennessee. To the left of view, part of the travel centre frontage at 2 Lion Street is visible, and across the road is 1 Red Lion Street; a locally listed building now occupied by Coin de Richmond. The pedestrian guardrail is shown bent inwards, possibly struck by a passing vehicle. A young woman with flared jeans and a knitted cardigan is shown carrying a shopping bag and other items while in the background a BMC 1100 approaches the junction. The remodelled junction now has a classically-styled corner building occupied by a branch of Waterstones Booksellers.
