The Lion Houses were built by James Nicholl between 1899 and 1903 in The Crescent, Laurel Road, Hillersdon Avenue, Glebe Road, Ranelagh Avenue, and Bellevue Road, on the former estate of The Laurels, a country house that once stood to the east of Barnes Green. Lion figures were used to adorn every gate-pier and parapet, it is believed due to an over-ordering error. All The Lions Houses are in the Barnes Green conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames and listed locally as Buildings of Townscape Merit. This view shows the pair at 28-30 Hillersdon Avenue, to the centre of a row of paired houses of Type B design at numbers 20-42. The decorative features of these houses, including the lions and the contrasting brick colours and buff terracotta decorative bands, are clearly visible. Some of the boundary wall piers are shown with spheres rather than lion figures. Also shown parked in the street in front of the houses is a Ford Granada 2.0 Saloon, which appears to have a vinyl roof finish, and a Datsun Cherry two-door saloon.
