Title
The Lion Houses in Hillersdon Avenue
Description
The Lion Houses were built by James Nicholl between 1899 and 1903 in The Crescent, Laurel Road, Hillersdon Avenue, Glebe Road, Ranelagh Avenue, and Bellevue Road, on the former estate of The Laurels, a country house that once stood to the east of Barnes Green. Lion figures were used to adorn every gate-pier and parapet, it is believed due to an over-ordering error. All The Lions Houses are in the Barnes Green conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames and listed locally as Buildings of Townscape Merit. This view shows the pair at 40-42 Hillersdon Avenue, together with one of the neighbouring pair at 36-38, the lions being clearly visible to either side and to the apex of their gables and on the gate piers to the front of the houses. Described as Type B of these houses’ design, the decorative buff terracotta bands to the parapets as shown are common to all variants. A Renault 6 with a dented passenger door is also shown parked in front of number 40.
