This view shows Holbrook House at 34-38 Hill Rise in the Richmond Hill conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Photograph was taken following demolition of the ground-floor front extension that previously served as the showroom of the Holbrook Motor Company Ltd. The work enabled the brick frontage and bowed wing of this eighteenth-century house to be restored, the building already having been Grade II listed in 1971; listing number: 1286011. Remnants of the showroom are visible beyond the plywood sheet fencing, temporarily erected by the contractors to control access to the site. The fence carries a warning board, another advertising NEW HOUSES by Joviel Homes Ltd, and a larger board offering PRESTIGE AIR CONDITIONED OFFICES – EARLY OCCUPATION – TO BE LET, by JONES LANG, and by BARNES & BARNES, whose office happens to occupy the adjoining building at 40-42 Hill Rise, partly visible to the right of view. This was once a wing of Holbrook House and is also Grade II listed; listing number 1065433. Holbrook House now has serviced offices, a mature tree standing in its front rose garden, and its former wing at 40-42 is now the offices of Savills estate agent. Also shown parked by a pair of coin-operated parking meters is a Toyota Carolla two-door saloon with a retro-fitted roof rack, and the rear of a Ford Cortina saloon. Two women, one motion-blurred, are also shown walking up the hill, its slope clearly illustrated in relation to the levels of Holbrook House.
