Title
Buildings in Hill Rise
Description
This view shows a pair of three-storey with attic buildings at 10-16 Hill Rise in the Richmond Hill conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Incorporating two shops and offices or residences above they are listed locally as Buildings of Townscape Merit. The shop at 10 Hill Rise is shown as THE IVY SHOP, its window display showing smart menswear. Number 16 appears to comprise two shops under a large hoarding showing LANG’S OF RICHOND. This is thought to be for the tobacconist kiosk to the right of the shop door, which has a striped awning, closed slatted shutter, and a panel below with signage offering CIGARETTES AND CONFECTIONERY with PEPSI and Marlborough trademarks. The adjacent shop door and window are beneath a smaller hoarding showing RICHMOND CAMPING CENTRE, with various items of outdoor clothing and equipment on display. Trademark stickers include EVER READY and CAMPING GAZ. A central recessed entrance has a sign and arrow pointing to 12-14 HILL RISE. A pair of boards projecting from a first-floor window shows OFFICES TO LET, courtesy of agents Herring Daw. A streetlamp, since removed, is shown fixed to a wall bracket beneath the second-floor windows. The building is now called Trinder House, with a remodelled central entrance to 14 Hill Rise. Just visible to the right of view is part of the pair of four-storey eighteenth-century houses with later shop fronts at 18-20 Hill Rise, Grade II listed in 1983; listing number: 1065432. The shop door shown at number 18 served Potters Music Shop at the time.
