Number 5 Hill Street is an early-eighteenth century three-storey house in the Central Richmond Conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. It was Grade II listed in 1979; listing number: 1065435. From 1914 it served as the frontage for a cinema auditorium built to the rear, originally known as The New Royalty Kinema, and became The Gaumont in 1949, retaining the name until it closed in 1980. The auditorium was demolished and rebuilt as the Filmhouse with a new frontage on Water Lane, now the Curzon Richmond. The house retains many original features, including a full-height balustraded staircase, panelling, and some original fireplaces. Shown trading as DOLPHIN HOUSE, also occupying the adjacent shop at 3 Hill Rise, the shop traded in school outfitting, sportswear and equipment, and men’s casual wear. The shop display presents a range of sports clothing and equipment, including mannequins dressed for riding, swimming, and cricket. Boxed stock is also visible in one of the first-floor windows. The terrace, incorporating 3-17 Hill Rise, was Grade II listed in 1983; listing number: 1357707.
