At the centre of this view is the shop at 44 Hill Rise, shown trading as BALDUR bookshop, in the Richmond Hill conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit, its single-storey shopfront has finialed consoles, one of which is shared with number 42. Like many of the shops on Hill Rise, this is likely to have been a later addition to an earlier brick house. Several second-hand books are on display in the shop windows, and the door presents a selection of bold floral illustrations. The shop is now Anna Boutique. To its left, the bow-fronted three-storey eighteenth-century building at 40-42 Hill Rise has the modern shop frontage for BARNES & BARNES ESTATE AGENT. Originally built as a wing of the adjacent Holbrook House, the building was Grade II listed in 1971; listing number: 1065433. Serving today as the office and shopfront of Savills, the building retains its impressive iron balustrades and finialed consuls although the high-level hoarding and the striped awnings shown to its upper-floor windows have been removed. A charity collection figure in the form of a giant panda and her cub is shown standing between the two shopfronts beyond a pair of coin-operated parking meters. To the right of BALDUR BOOKSHOP, the three-storey brick building 46 Hill Rise, also listed locally, has a shallower ground-floor shop extension, shown trading as David Singer. Also shown, a Ford Cortina estate is parked in front of BALDUR BOOKSHOP, and a Renault 4 occupies the adjacent bay, although only partially visible.
