Title
Chemist shop building on Hill Rise
Description
This three-quarter view shows the late-eighteenth or early-nineteenth century three-storey shop building with its impressive late-nineteenth century shopfront at 62-66 Hill Rise in the Richmond Hill conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. The shop is addressed as 64, its striped awning showing CHEMIST but obscuring the shop’s hoarding. A suspended sign above also shows CHEMIST with the image of a carboy. Grade II listed in 1983; listing number: 1285980, the shop has since become Bramble and Moss florists, but retains is distinctive shopfront. It still has the trade name of Blanchford set in mosaic at its entrance, Reginald Arthur Blanchford being shown in the 1901 Census. The first-floor window shutters have since been removed, but the iron balustrade remains. To the right of the shop, a single-storey timber building carries a hoarding showing RICHMOND HILL which disappears out of frame. The exposed brick flanking wall of 62-66 shows signs of a previous single-storey structure. The timber building has since been replaced by a pair of three-storey buildings, once presenting a shopfront, the upper floors keeping traditional yellow brick appearance complementing the former chemist shop building.
