This view shows two eighteenth-century buildings of contrasting scale, later extended by single-storey shop fronts, at 20 and 24 Hill Rise in the Richmond Hill conservation area of Richmond upon Thames. The pair of four-storey brick houses at 18-20 have modified Victorian shop fronts and were Grade II listed in 1983; listing number: 1065432. The shop is thought to have been occupied at the time by Deltakos UK Ltd, although only part of the shop is visible. Its expansive flanking wall is shown displaying two large advertising boards, the upper one for Gauntlet car dealers, stating: ‘Gauntlet not-so-used cars. New-car confidence at used-car prices.’, and the lower one for Harp Lager with the slogan ‘Enjoy the Call.’ The advertising boards have since been removed, the traditional brickwork of this prominent flanking wall now more befitting the historic townscape of the locality. The pair of houses at 24-32 Hill Rise, part of which can be seen beyond the shopfronts, are set further back, with two storeys, hipped slate roof and pedimented dormers. Dating back to c1700, the long single-storey shopfront extensions are early-twentieth century, and the buildings also Grade II listed in 1983; listing number 1357708. Number 24 is shown trading as A&M CLUBS – HIS & HERS Hair, Health and Beauty. The painted flanking wall of the adjacent shop extension shows ‘Gymnasium and Sauna’. Some ironwork and a slatted platform above the shop, since removed, presumably provided service access to the advertising boards above. 26 Hill Rise is believed to have been an antiques shop, although its hoarding is hidden beneath a plain awning and its window display obscured by reflections of the shops opposite. Two people appear to be discussing business in the doorway of 20 Hill Rise and a white-haired woman walks in front of number 26. A partly visible left-hand drive car is also shown parked in the road beside a traffic sign.
