Shop buildings on Hill Rise
Description
This view, looking north-west towards the junction with Hill Street and Bridge Street, shows part of a three-storey terrace of shop buildings on Hill Rise in the Richmond Hill conservation are of Richmond-upon-Thames. Dating from the eighteenth-century, the terrace, incorporating 3-17 Hill Rise, was Grade II listed in 1983; listing number:1357707. Starting from the left of view, 11 Hill Rise is shown as RENDEZVOUS RESTAURANT, number 9 as Richmond Tea and Coffee Co. shop and coffee lounge, number 7 as SMARTIES with 1970s-style window graphics, number 3-5 as DOLPHIN HOUSE - YOUTHS AND MENS CASUAL WEAR. The former Kings Head Hotel, which faces onto Bridge Street, marks the end of the terrace. An eighteenth-century inn with early-to-mid nineteenth-century alterations, it was Grade II listed in 1983 as Christies, 1 Hill Rise; listing number: 1065431. The shop buildings shown beyond across Bridge Street were demolished in the 1980s making way for Quinlan Terry’s Richmond Riverside development. A number 65 bus to Ealing Broadway, notably an AEC Regent RT, gives way at the traffic lights on the junction while a pedestrian risks crossing the road unseen behind the bus and in front of a Hillman Avenger. A group of pedestrians is also shown walking towards the junction.
