Building on Hill Rise
This view shows a bow-fronted three-storey eighteenth-century building at 40-42 Hill Rise, Richmond-upon-Thames with an added modern shop frontage for BARNES & BARNES ESTATE AGENT. Originally built as a wing of the adjacent Holbrook House, just visible to the left of view, the building was Grade II listed in 1971; listing number: 1065433. Now serving as the offices and shopfront of Savills, the building retains its impressive iron balustrades and finialed consuls although the high-level hoarding and the striped awnings shown to its upper-floor windows have been removed. Holbrook House, also Grade II listed in 1971; listing number 1286011, once had a single-storey motor show room added to its frontage, which has since been demolished and the restored building now operates as serviced offices. Also shown is part of the BALDUR bookshop at number 44, listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit and trading today as Anna Boutique. A charity collection figure in the form of a giant panda and her cub stands between the shopfronts beyond a pair of coin-operated parking meters. A Renault 4 is also shown parked in the street.
