This view shows 22-30 Hill Street; part of a terrace of nineteenth-century shop buildings on the east side of the street in the Central Richmond conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Known as Castle Terrace, it comprises mostly three-storey shop buildings, but number 34 out of view to the right is four-storey with a gable above, having been The Talbot Tap public house for much of the nineteenth century. All are listed locally as Buildings of Townscape Merit. Shops shown include CROWN WALLPAPERS, TOUCH OF CLASS, GREAT WALL RESTAURANT, POSNERS - its window still showing its closing down sale, K SHOE SHOP, and WIMPY BAR, above which HAIR BEAUTIQUE occupies the first floor. The lane shown beyond is Castle Yard, with the side elevation of number 20 just visible to the left; one of a row of nineteenth-century shop buildings of more varied form. Castle Yard is shown as a road to the right of view, but it has since been paved and designated as a pedestrian passage. The building to the right is the end of Castle Terrace, also consisting of nineteenth-century shop buildings with upper frontages of more uniform design. A few pedestrians are also shown walking past, including a man looking towards the photographer.
