Title
Garrick's Lodge in Johnson's Drive
Description
Garrick’s Lodge in the Hampton Village conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames was originally on the Garrick’s Villa estate before Johnson’s Drive and its Georgian-style townhouses were built in the late 1960s. Garrick’s Villa became the home of actor and theatre manager David Garrick (1717-1779) in 1754 when it was known as Hampton House. With alterations by Robert Adam in 1756 and 1773, Garrick’s Villa was Grade I listed in 1952; listing number: 1193477. Garrick’s Lodge, on the corner of historic Church Street and modern Johnson’s Drive, has no listing status, although its long narrow plan appears in the 1897 Ordnance Survey map in the grounds of a school. This view shows its Wisteria-covered east elevation, with a part-gable end and timber-supported first-floor window bay; since little altered, although the building has been divided into two semi-detached houses. Also shown parked in the driveway are a Mercedes saloon and the tail end of a Datsun Cherry Estate.
