Title
The Hole In the Wall public house in Park Road
Description
The pair of former gatehouses, shown here as the Hole in the Wall pub and previously known as the Park Road Arms, are at 1-3 Park Road, Richmond, in the St Matthias conservation area of the Borough. They are listed locally as Buildings of Townscape Merit. After the buildings fell into disuse, they were purchased together with the surrounding land in 2009 by the broadcaster and natural historian Sir David Attenborough, who owns the neighbouring property, to save the site from being redeveloped and to extend his home. The buildings have since been refurbished for residential use. In 2011, a gruesome discovery was made during excavations in the form of a human skull, which is believed to be that of Julia Martha Thomas, who was murdered and dismembered by her maid Kate Webster in 1879 following an argument. Most of her body had been dumped in the Thames and found near Barnes Bridge. Although Webster fled to Ireland, she was arrested, found guilty of murder following trial at the Old Bailey, and hanged at Wandsworth Prison. This three-quarter view shows the contrasting finishes to the face and flank of Number 1, apparently similar to other buildings in the road, and also the Courage brewery pub signs including one with their cockerel emblem.
