Green Cottage in Park Road
38 Park Road, originally known Green Cottage, was built in 1830 by Henry Walker, one of a family of the earliest property developers of Hampton Wick. It is located on the corner of a modern road Bennet Close, named after Timothy Bennet, a local cobbler commemorated for campaigning for public right of way across Bushy Park, which was once an access route to an iron and brass foundry on the site now occupied by the local public library. Like many of the houses and cottages in Park Road, number 38 is listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit and is in the Hampton Wick conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. This photograph was taken when the house appears to have been in some state of dereliction, the windows all boarded up. It also predates the construction of Bennet Close, which necessitated the removal of the south-eastern extension of the house much of which can be seen to the right of this view. The padlocked picket gateway to the foundry site is clearly visible, as is an Austin Maxi parked in front of the building extension. Partially visible beyond to the left of view is Park House, which once served as a residential school and was Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1180634.
