View of Patten Alley
Description
Patten Alley, now a stone-paved and brick wall lined alley connecting The Vineyard with Ormond Road, once crossed the open fields of seventeenth-century Richmond. Located in the Richmond Hill conservation area of the Borough and surrounded by historic buildings, the brick walls enclosing Patten Alley were Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1180675. This view shows where the alley opens out at The Vineyard end, the west side wall shown to the left being eighteenth-century red and plum brick and, beyond the side of the house shown, the east side built from nineteenth-century yellow stock. The house is believed to be number 4 The Vineyard, originally 1 Portland Villas, built during the mid-nineteenth century and listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit. The deviation to the right seen at the far end of the view was apparently done without permission by Nathaniel Rawlings, the owner of Clarence House in 1696, just out of view to the left, to expand his forecourt and although he was fined there was no requirement to remedy the alteration so it remains today. In addition to a cast iron swan neck street lamp, the view also shows a Richmond-upon-Thames road sweeper's cart, complete with brooms and other long handled tools, beyond which is a square bin with a handled lid.
