Title
Virginia Lodge in Park Road
Description
36 Park Road, originally known as Virginia Lodge and later as Compton Lodge, was built in 1850 by John Walker, one of a family of the earliest property developers of Hampton Wick. It is located on the corner of a modern road Bennet Close, named after Timothy Bennet a local cobbler commemorated for campaigning for public right of way across Bushy Park, which was once an access route to an iron and brass foundry on the site now occupied by the local public library. Like many of the houses and cottages in Park Road, number 36 is listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit and is in the Hampton Wick conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. This three-quarter view shows both the north-west elevation, the entrance overlooking what is now Bennet Close, and the south-west elevation facing Park Road. The contrasting tone of the brickwork shows the outline of what was once a canopy to the ground-floor window, which has since been restored with one of similar profile respecting the building's heritage.
