Brick boundary walls in Bushy Park
Description
This view shows a section of the brick boundary walls of Bushy Park at Hampton Wick Gate at the corner of Park Road and Sandy Lane, in the Hampton Wick conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Enclosed by Henry VIII in 1537 for deer coursing, much of the boundary walls to Bushy Park are of the late sixteenth century and were Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1358059. Hampton Wick Gate marks one end of a historic public route across the Royal Park, which was closed off in by a wall put in place by the then-Ranger, the 2nd Earl of Halifax. A local cobbler, Timothy Bennet, led a successful campaign to have the pathway reopened, commemorated in 1752 by the naming of the path as Cobbler's Walk and by a memorial built in 1900, which stands by this gate just out of frame to the right of this picture. The memorial was Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1252096. The pier in the foreground is part of the gateway to the Hampton Wick Royal Cricket Club ground in the south-east corner of the Park. The water fountain in view to the left of Hampton Wick Gate is believed to be dated 1880 and seems to be disused.
