Title
Building in Park Road
Description
This view taken from the service yard enclosed by the rear of buildings on High Street, Park Road, and School Road, shows the rear of the cluster of buildings constructed on the triangular plot at numbers 2, 4, and 6 Park Road on the north side of Park Road, located at the centre of the historic village of Hampton Wick in the correspondingly named conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Numbers 2-4 are thought to have been built in 1860 by Charles Miles, number 2 being used as a grocers and off-licence shop until the 1970s, and its rear extending behind number 4 so the entire brick elevation shown here belongs to the shop. The old service doors in this view suggest this part of the building was used for loading and storage. Rose Cottages at 6-8 Park Road were built in in 1885 by Sir Thomas James Nelson, chairman of the Local Board, who during the 1880s led the clearance of slums in the adjacent site, now occupied by the Assembly Rooms, currently the home of Kelly's Dance School, and Mayfield, currently the Chase Lodge Hotel. The photograph shows the two-storey annex to the rear of number 6. Some of the High Street buildings can be seen in the gap to the left of view beyond 2 Park Road, most now having modern shop fronts and partly screened by ornamental trees in a triangular seating area. Also visible, parked in the yard are a Fiat 500, a Ford Anglia Estate, an Austin Maxi, and a Ford Zephyr.
