Cottages in Park Road
Description
Most prominent in this view are numbers 2 and 4 Park Road on the north side of Park Road at the centre of the historic village of Hampton Wick in the correspondingly named conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. Thought to have been built in 1860 by Charles Miles, number 2 was used as a grocers and off-licence shop until the 1970s. At the time of this photograph, the shop, still seen displaying M.SMITH - WINE SPIRITS BEERS GROCERIES, was boarded up and has since been converted to residential use. Beyond, Rose Cottages at 6-8 Park Road were built in in 1885 by Sir Thomas James Nelson, chairman of the Local Board, who during the 1880s led the clearance of slums in the adjacent site, now occupied by the Assembly Rooms, currently the home of Kelly's Dance School, and Mayfield, currently the Chase Lodge Hotel. Just visible to the right of view is the rear of the former Hampton Wick Local Board and UDC office at 45a High Street, designed by Richard T Elsam and built in 1884. It features an impressive terracotta Jacobian revival frontage and was Grade II listed in 2013, listing number 1412912. It was during postwar years used as the local public library until the current one was built nearby in Bennet Close, and has since been converted to residential use.
